6 Step Formula to Achieve Your Goals

by Dr. Steven Yen

Today, I would like to share with you the “6 step formula” to achieve your goals. This formula is GUARANTEED to help you achieve/accomplish what ever it is that your heart desires :)

Need to lose 10, 25, 50, or even 100 lb?  NO problem.
Want to have an actual “conversation” with your teenage daughter like you used to do when she was younger?  Sure thing.
Need to find some ways to pay off those credit card bills so that people will stop calling you in the middle of the night? Absolutely.

The 6 Step Formula was personally “scrutinized” by the greatest inventor in history, Thomas Edison and I’ve actually used portions of this formula myself. By following some of these steps, I lost 40 lbs in the past! Achieving your goal will take work, and bigger the goal, the harder you’ll need to work; however, this formula will help you figure out what you truly desire. It will help you solidify your heart’ desire and to draw that line in the sand so that all the “hard work” becomes bearable even if the journey isn’t easy to go through.

You need to figure out exactly what it is that you really want.

Too many people have made New Year Resolutions in the past but then just go on living “life as usual” without making any real changes. The biggest reason is that they’re really not clear on what it is they want.  In my case, I said that I want to lose some weight.  Sure, that sounds good BUT I’ve been saying that for years (well okay, decades is more like it) and I know I’m not alone here.  So, the first thing you need to do is to have a New Year Resolution that you can and WILL stick to! Only then you can turn it into a reality. Make it clear, specific and fill in as many details as possible.

In my case, my goal is to lose 20 lb in 2012 and finish my “Quest to 50” project. Massive actions mean massive results which is why I’m kicking the year off with 10 in 20, losing 10 lbs in 20 days. That sure sounds a lot more clear and specific than saying “I need to lose some weight this year.” Don’t be vague because just saying, “I need to lose weight” is not enough.  You need to provide more details that that! I am going to lose 10 lbs in 20 days, and at the end of 20 days, I’m going to put on my size 32 pants which are currently hanging right beside my bed.

Once I put those pants on, I’ll be asking my wife to video tape me shaving my beard off and then I’ll send that video to David, Sonia, Grace, Grace, Cassandra, Joe, Robin, Simon, Conrad, and Kate. After that, I’m going to go to my three year old daughter Abby and make her give me 2 big kisses, one on my mouth and another one on my chin :)

As you can see, I’m very clear on what I want to accomplish, the rewards for accomplishing my goal, how I’m gong to celebrate this and who I’m going to celebrate this with. Even just thinking about it and about my little girl kissing my chin for the FIRST TIME in her life makes me excited and it puts a smile on my face. Of course, I will be a lot more motivated and excited to lose the weight now with these details figured out rather than just simply saying I’m going to lose some weight this year.

So that’s step one in the for 6 steps formula. It is absolutely the most important thing for you to do if you want to make your New Year Resolution a reality.

However, dreaming up all these details and rewards and celebrations will not turn your resolution into reality all by itself.  You need to put some work into it, and that will be step two.

Figure out a game plan! Decide what it is that you are willing to do to turn your Resolution into Reality.  Again, the more clear, more specific and more detailed – the better.

For me, to lose my first 10 lbs, I will be having my fruits and vegetable juice every morning: 16 oz of vegetable and fruit juices at 2:1 ratio, blended with sesame seeds, flax seeds and Gogi berries every morning at 7:30am, then have a apple or pear at about 10:00. Lunch will be a protein size of my palm with some carrot or celery sticks or raw broccoli, with no dressing of course. I can have some nuts for a snack at around 3:30.  Dinner will begin with another 8 oz of the fruits and vegetable juice, plus a big plate of vegetable.

That’s it.
No starch, no protein.

As for as exercise goes, 3 miles everyday Monday to Thursday, plus Saturday.  I’ll be pushing myself a little further on Fridays so every Friday, I’ll be doing 5 miles. Plus 10x push ups, sit ups and squats everyday. This means 10 push ups, sit ups and squats on Monday, 20 on Tuesday, 30 on Wednesday, 40 on ‘Thursday, 50 on Friday, 60 on Saturday.  Sunday is day of rest so I take a break.  Yikes! No wonder I love Sundays. :)

Once again, you see that I’ve laid out a specific plan of action. I know exactly what I need to do to accomplish my New Year Resolution.

Truthfully, if you just take some time and really go though the mental process of what needs to be done (like I just did) then you stand a much greater chance in turning your New Year Resolution into a reality. The crazy thing is, there are 4 more steps I haven’t even shared with you yet. If you think these last two steps were good, just wait until you see what’s ahead!

January 1 is always a wonderful day.  A day full with new hope and new possibilities. It’s a day where we can believe anything is possible.

Spend some time today with your own resolutions and give some thought to what it is that you would like to see happen in 2012. Better yet, get out a piece of paper and write them down.  If you do that, 2012 will be a much better year for you. I can guarantee that you’ll be glad you did and you’ll thank yourself for going through this exercise once 2013 rolls around.

I want to wish all of you a Happy New Year.
