The power of music cannot be underestimated because as human beings, we are hardwired to appreciate beauty. Many people may not think to turn to music when looking to relax their bodies and minds but they should especially if they have fibromyalgia.
Physiologically, listening to beautiful music can directly stimulate your brain, relax your muscles and help promote properhormonal flow. Additionally, music can also help reduce stress and anxiety by helping your body to produce endorphins. Thanks to modern MRI and brain scan techniques, researchers have shown that while you’re listening to music written by Mozart, your entire brain is lit up. This means that the blood flow to your brain is increased and your brain is then able to function at a higher level.
Psychcentral.com explains that in a new study, University of Granada researchers showed that music therapy in association with guided imagery or other relaxation techniques significantly reduced pain, relieved depression and anxiety and improve sleep.
Study participants were evaluated at the beginning of the treatment, four weeks after the intervention, and eight weeks after the intervention, at the end of the study.
Patients were given a CD to listen at home. Then, researchers measured a number of variables associated with the main symptoms of fibromyalgia including pain intensity, quality of life, impact of the condition on patient’s daily life, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, self-efficacy and well-being.
Now, not only does listening to music beneficial from a physiological point of view, it can also bring peace and tranquility to your spirit. Music can help heal your body in a way that’s much deeper than almost any other modality. Think about how great you feel when you turn on your favorite song. Most likely a big smile comes on your face, you want to sing along, and you want to move a little bit to the music. That’s good (and healthy) for you and your body!
Another way music can help you reduce pain is through singing. When you sing, you allow your lungs to empty the “dead air” that’s sitting at the bottom of them. You actively breathe out more carbon dioxide, and by doing so, not only will you increase the oxygen to your body but you also help buffer the ph level in your body. Singing will help you reduce the acidity in your body. Coupling that will taking a Epsom salt bath, will help significantly reduce the pain in you’re experiencing in your body.
