Yes, she just called me fat. My caring, loving, and supportive wife just called me the dreaded “F” word – Fat.
I had just finished my morning Epsom salt bath and I felt great. I felt totally refreshed, recharged, and ready to take on the day and that’s when my wife walked into the bathroom.
She glanced at me for a few seconds, looked straight into my eyes, then promptly put a dagger right straight through my heart. She said those three words, “you look fat.” Then without another word, she just walked away!!
I was shocked! Dumbfounded! Speechless!
Well…okay, actually I did have a few words that I would’ve liked to have said to her:
- What do you mean I look fat?
- Come on, it’s the holidays!
- Fat? What do you mean? I’ve lost 40 pounds already! Well…I did gain back those 10 pounds…but wait, I’m STILL 30 pounds lighter than I was when you married me! What else do you want?
Plus a few others sentences but those are better left to myself for the sake of our marriage.
Then I forced myself to look at my body in the mirror and I couldn’t help but to focus on my belly. Slowly, painfully, and
reluctantly, I said to myself: Yes…I am FAT!
Some of you may not know the story about my broken pen and how I set out for myself to lose 50 pounds to get to my “medical ideal body weight.” Well, that was 4 years ago. I did manage to lose 40 pounds, like I said, and it was great! Honestly, my energy level has skyrocketed and I have much less aches and pains than I used to in the past. It was the BEST thing that I’ve ever done for myself in my life. The best part about this is that it really wasn’t that hard to do after I stumbled upon the “stair down weight loss methods,” which I’ve shown you in the past.
Then life started to get in the way…Like it always does. My first daughter was born and then my 2nd came along. I started to take my eyes off of my goal and slowly, well…you know what happened. My wife called me FAT! Ouch!
Well, since it’s that time of year again (the time to make new years resolutions) I figured it’s the perfect time to jump into action.
So, here’s the deal – I NEED YOUR HELP!
I’ve decided that it’s time to start taking massive actions because, truthfully, that’s the best way to achieve some massive results. You all know what I look like, and if you don’t, then just take a look at the very top left corner of this web page…yep, that’s me!
A Chinese looking dude with a goatee. I think that goatee helps me look cool, doesn’t it?
Well, I hate the darn thing. It’s scratchy, it’s itchy, and over all it’s VERY uncomfortable to wear most of the time. All of those things are bad but I think the worst thing about having this facial hair is that my three year old refuses to kiss me on the mouth because of it.
The point is this – I’m dying to shave it off. My wife can’t wait for the day that I do and my kids really don’t know what I look like without it. Truthfully, they probably won’t recognize me without it but here’s the kicker: I can’t shave it off. I’m not allowed to.
The rule for the “stair down weight loss program” was that I’m only allowed to shave my beard every time I lose 5 pounds. PLUS if I gain any of those pounds back, I need to LOSE them first AND then lose 5 EXTRA pounds before I’m allowed to shave!
Let’s just say that it’s been a very VERY long time since I’ve pulled out the razor.
Well, as of today, I’m changing that rule…It’s my rule so I can do whatever I want with it.
Here’s my new years resolution and here’s what I NEED your help with. As of January 1st, 2012, I am back on my “50 pound quest.”
I’ve already lost 30 so good news is that I’m already half way there. All I need your help with is to help me lose the final 20 (damn…it used to be the final 10…oh well)
My new years resolution is to make 2012 the healthiest year for EVERYONE, starting with myself.
I’m committed to set an example and show you how YOU can unleash your body’s healing power by making some simple changes. You know, by making changes in the way you sleep, eat, and exercise so that you can help your body help itself.
The first thing that needs to happen is for me to shed my extra weight...all 20 pounds of weight…in a gentle, healthy, and fairly simple way.
I want to change from Dr. FAT to Dr. FIT!
This is all starting 1/1/2012.
The initial phase is going to be called 10 in 20. With your help, I’m committed to losing 10 pounds in the first 20 days of 2012…like I said: massive actions for massive results!
Everything I do will be recorded. My sleep schedule, my meals, my exercises. All I need your help with is to keep me accountable! I will be documenting everything I’m doing and sharing it all with you. It will be like you’re right here next to me each day…I want to share this journey with you! All you need to do is to help make sure I’m on track. That was the whole idea of the beard in the first place, so that everyone around me can see it and help me in this process…I’m just kicking it up another notch.
So, starting 1/1/12, I will be going through 10 in 20 and opening up my life to you so that you can see my progress. 2011 may or may not have been good for some of you but let’s work together to make 2012 the best year ever.
Together, and with your nagging if I’m getting off track, let’s all work to be healthier, more vibrant, and full of energy.
They do say that there’s power in numbers…let’s put that to the test!

Hi Dr. Yen! My husband sent me something from you and I just came across your email and blog and decided to take a look. I need to lose some weight too (from being on Lyrica for years!) I take 3 – 200mg Lyricas a day and I’m dropping to 2 a day and if I have pain I can take Hydrocodone. Actually, for the first time since 2007, I am feeling absolutely Great!!!! Ya know, I quit drinking my daily 2-3 Diet Pepsi’s and now I honestly wonder if I DO have Fibro or if I actually had aspertame poisoning?!!!! Soooo, I think I will try to take just 1 Lyrica a day and see what happens. Oh, I have never had a weight problem my whole life until I started taking the Fibro meds so I’m going to diet with you!!!! I don’t have a problem with the eating, I’ve always eaten very healthy and I eat from a small plate and even then, I only eat til I’m full. I usually only eat 2-3 meals a day. A bowl of cereal (Special K) every morning and maybe a Fiber bar and or Yogurt (Greek) for lunch and then frozen veggies thrown in the microwave and possibly a small (3-5) little bites of chicken. So if I can just get off the Lyrica, I should lose this damn big belly I got – I HATE it!!!!!! Okay, hopefully I’ll be able to find you again. I’m not into blogs – your’s is my first. Nice meeting you, Lori Schulz
